Things to Do Rather Than Doomscrolling
Updated: Jul 9
Are you tired of sitting down the moment you have nothing to do and just doomscroll for hours? A little while is okay for it helps you relax and rest for a moment. But when the scrolling lasts for hours and hours, maybe a change is needed?
Doomscrolling, also known as an excessive amount of time reading or watching negative content and news online and scrolling through reel after reel, article after article, loosing track of time and getting lost in the world of information.
This activity can be more harmful than you may think. The mental strain it has on our minds, seeing so much information, overwhelming us with emotions and thoughts. It drains us of mental, emotional, and physical health. Think about it, if we are always watching and reading negative news, seeing people hurt, seeing things that create anger and frustration in us, wishing we could change the world; it drains our energy.
Don't get me wrong, staying updated with the news a little is good, but drowning yourself and actively seeking negative news has its health problems.
So, what are some things that help reduce Doomscrolling and what are some things you can do instead?
Creative Pursuits:
Try finding an outlet through something creative. Do some art, play some music, go to a museum, try knitting a scarf. Anything that helps your mind work is a great option if you're looking to reduce screen time.
Set a Timer:
Set a timer when you start looking at media. Try for an hour or less. Try to simply find things that keep you updated but no more than that.
Research Sources:
Make sure your sources are reliable, balanced, and trustworthy.
Practice Mindfulness:
Begin noticing how you feel when scrolling. When you start to feel a slight aggravation or sadness, take a break and focus on something new.
Balance the Bad with Good:
After scrolling, focus on something good for a moment. Watch a funny video, listen to positive music, read some good news. Balance the bad news with good news.
If you do anything, make sure you focus on yourself. Learn to stop when it feels too much and refocus on something happy and positive. Balance is key to reducing doomscrolling. There is a lot of negative news, especially in today's day and age but learning how we take in the information is important. We must balance the good with the bad because there is a lot of good in the world as well.
